My choice for this week is: My Favourite Villains
Like many of us out there, I love a well-written villain. Some villains I enjoy because I hate them so much, others I love unashamedly. My choices are a mixed bunch but I am never indifferent towards them which is the best compliment I could give really.
1. The Darkling from Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy

Now, I’m the first to admit I’ve only read the first book of this series but I absolutely adored the Darkling. He was much more interesting to me than any of the ‘good’ guys (especially Mal blergh)! There was just something so compelling about his character and I was itching to know more about him (which is pretty ironic since I’ve never gotten back to the trilogy as yet).
2. Draco Malfoy from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series

I think Draco was so interesting to me as a character because he was so spiteful and cowardly. He was certainly one of the villains in the series (albeit far from the worst one) but there was also just something a little vulnerable about him too. I always had a soft spot for him whilst recognizing that he was still pretty toxic at the same time.
3. Solas from Dragon Age: Inquisition

Not technically a bookish villain (although the Dragon Age game has had some tie-in books so I’m technically counting it!) Solas was an intriguing villain because he initially didn’t appear to be a villain at all. He was one of your companions and (potentially) a love interest. He was that villain that hides in plain sight, one you never see coming. I adored him and my Elven Inquisitor romanced him. Still, he’s probably the best villain in the series. Well done BioWare. *slow clap*
4. Maven Calore from Victoria Aveyard’s ‘Red Queen’ series

Again, I haven’t actually read the full series (or even all of the first book – I’m getting back to it, I swear!) but Maven hooked me right from the start. When he showed his true colours… well, I was shocked. From what I gather, he only gets more twisted as the series goes on (but I still love him!) 😛
5. Prince Cardan from Holly Black’s The Folk of the Air series

Prince Cardan… where do I even start? When I first started reading ‘The Cruel Prince’ I hated him. I thought he was vile and didn’t see how I would ever warm up to him, and yet… he grew on me (like fungus). I’m now pretty obsessed with him and totally want him and Jude to get together and make beautiful half-fae babies. How on earth did Holly Black manage to turn him around and totally change my opinion on him? Genius.

Cardan is a a fantastic character! And, yay, Solas!!!
Ah, what a great post! I just finished The Grisha trilogy recently, and The Darkling is one of my all time favorite villains. And Cardan! I’m gonna just die from anticipation waiting to see what happens with him and Jude in The Wicked King.

I love the Darkling too! Compared to Mal, he’s definitely more interesting and complex!
