Stacking the Shelves – a weekly meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews & Reading Reality
what’s the buzz: holiday!
I am officially on holiday for two weeks! It feels really strange to be taking my summer holiday when the weather itself is slowly but surely creeping into Autumn. However, Autumn is officially my favourite time of year so I care not a jot! I’m not a heat-lover (I’m too fair-skinned to spend any time out in the blistering hot sun). So I’m actually pretty happy the weather is getting crisper and cooler.
It’s pretty much time for sweaters and hats and all my favourite things. Plus, it’s so much nicer to cozy up with a book at this time of year. I don’t tend to read outside much (I am not an insect fan and they seem to know it and always harass me when I’m outside reading). Nope, I’m better off in the cooler months!
Apologies for the lateness of this post. I started it on Saturday but a combination of laziness and business (lol) has meant that I didn’t get it finished until today! It also might be because this is going to be a long post – might have been putting it off!
holiday book haul
Now, I’m warning you in advance, this is going to be a mega-haul because I went a bit mad on eBay! I shouldn’t be let loose with money haha!
City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab | Magic Triumphs by Ilona Andrews
First up, we have these two beauts – I’m really excited to read ‘City of Ghosts’ (I’m seriously contemplating getting the paperback copy as well since it is gorgeous). I’ve also been waiting for the latest (and last!) book in the ‘Kate Daniels’ series. I even got a signed copy!!
The Spell Singer and Other Stories by Beverley Mathias | Holiday of the Ikon by Thomas Shapcott | The Wool-Pack by Cynthia Harnett | Castors Away! by Hester Burton | The White Horse Gang by Nina Bawden | The Midnight Fox by Betsy Byers | The Edge of the Clouds by KM Peyton | Flambards by KM Peyton | Flambards in Summer by KM Peyton
The first bulk of vintage books I bought this week! I was happy to pick up the first three books in the ‘Flambards’ series. I’ve been meaning to read this series for ages. I’m also always happy to pick up any Nina Bawden books! I’m looking forward to getting stuck into these while I am off on holiday!
The Grey King by Susan Cooper | Five Dolls in a House by Helen Clare | Viking’s Sunset by Henry Treece | The Road to Miklagard by Henry Treece | The Mystery of the Cross-Eyes Man by Paul Berna | Tupi’s Papa by Elizabeth Borton de Treviño | Viking’s Dawn by Henry Treece | The Workhouse Child by Geraldine Symons
Got a tonne of Puffin books this week (which is awesome since I love them!) Quite an eclectic mix as well and I always love the old-school vintage covers.
Ross Poldark by Winston Graham | Demelza by Winston Graham | Jeremy Poldark by Winston Graham
I really need to get back into watching Poldark. It’s totally my thing so I’m not sure why I haven’t watched beyond the first couple of episodes. These editions are just so pretty (and so very sixties!)
The Circus of Adventure by Enid Blyton | The Island of Adventure by Enid Blyton | The Castle of Adventure by Enid Blyton | The River of Adventure by Enid Blyton | The Sea of Adventure by Enid Blyton | The Valley of Adventure by Enid Blyton | The Ship of Adventure by Enid Blyton | The Mountain of Adventure by Enid Blyton
I already own this series (the re-released versions that came out a few years ago). However, I couldn’t pass this lot up on eBay! The covers on these editions are just stunningly beautiful (the above photo doesn’t do them justice). I think they might be the prettiest Enid Blyton books I own!
The Black Lion by Patricia & Lionel Fanthorpe | Watership Down by Richard Adams | Tarka the Otter by Henry Williamson | Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White
I got this lot of books primarily for ‘Charlotte’s Web’ – which I have (horror of horrors) never actually read. Been meaning to do something about that for ages. The film tie-in edition is just so cute – I’m actually pretty sure I saw the film as a youngster! I already own this edition of ‘Watership Down’ but this is a better copy. I’m not sure what to think of ‘The Black Lion’ – the cover is… erm, interesting! I got it in the August Prudence and the Crow box. 🙂
Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great by Judy Blume | Are You There God: It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume | Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume | Superfudge by Judy Blume | Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself by Judy Blume | Then Again, Maybe I Won’t by Judy Blume | Blubber by Judy Blume | It’s Not the End of the World by Judy Blume | Deenie by Judy Blume
I was really pleased to stumble across this lot of Judy Blume books going for a very reasonable price on eBay! I used to love her books when I was younger (especially ‘Tiger Eyes’). The Piccolo editions are just really awesome – love the covers! Plenty of reading to keep me going this holiday!
The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien | The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien | The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien
I also happened across this little lot of Tolkien books. I am pretty sure that the bind-up of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ is the same one my mum had. Her cover got really badly damaged when she loaned it out to a friend so they got it recovered as a hardback. This edition of ‘The Silmarillion’ matches the copy I had as does ‘The Hobbit’ (which I seemed to have lost somewhere – lord knows where). It feels pretty apt as yesterday was the anniversary of Tolkien’s death.
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold | The Rule of One by Ashley Saunders & Leslie Saunders
I’ve been meaning to check out ‘The Lovely Bones’ for awhile now so when I saw it for £0.99 on Kindle Daily Deals I knew it was time. I also picked up ‘The Rule of One’ via Amazon First Reads.
Private Charter by N.R. Walker | Magic Stars by Ilona Andrews
I admit, it was the cover for ‘Private Charter’ which drew me in! *fans self* I also love Derek from the ‘Kate Daniels’ series so this novella was a must-buy!
These Rebel Waves by Sara Raasch | The Tethered Mage by Melissa Caruso
I was really happy to get ‘These Rebel Waves’ in a book box (but forgot to take a photo of the actual book!) I also snagged ‘The Tethered Mage’ too.
borrowed book haul
Not too many borrowed titles (I can barely find the time to read my purchased books let alone borrowed ones!) I’m happy with my mini haul though!
Rule Breaker by Lily Morton | Beneath the Water by Sarah Painter
Both of these books look interesting so I’m happy I was able to borrow them for a bit! Plenty of books to keep me going this holiday!
