Mid-Year Book Freakout 2016

Posted August 7, 2016 by Brin in Tags / 2 Comments

The Mid-year Book Freakout was a survey/tag I took part in last year and I really wanted to do it again this year! It was created by the lovely ladies at A Book So Fathomless

Mid-Year Book Freakout 2016

I haven’t been tagged for this but I have completed this survey/tag for the last two years so I couldn’t NOT do it again this year! I have barely read anything this year (seriously, it is probably my worst year for reading since I learned HOW to read) but I will do my best with this. 🙂

I am also a bit late to the party this year but better late than never amirite??

1. Best Book You’ve Read Yet in 2016

the raven king

This is definitely an easy one – The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater – hands down. I have loved every single book in this series and felt this was a fitting denouement.

2. Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2016

fool's quest

Fool’s Quest by Robin Hobb. I have been eagerly anticipating this book for absolutely ages and it didn’t disappoint. I can’t wait for the next one.

3. New Release You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To

a court of mist and furty

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas. I have heard a lot about this book (both good and bad) and I am not sure yet how I feel about the direction the story has taken but I am definitely eager to find out.

4. Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year

crystal storm

Crystal Storm by Morgan Rhodes – I am a sucker for this story. I just have so much love for this series even though I totally get the criticisms as well. It’s just so much fun and I love the characters to death. 🙂

5. Biggest Disappointment

the winner's kiss

The Winner’s Kiss by Marie Rutkoski. I know I gave this book five stars but I was totally left wanting MOAR (OK, kinda clutching at straws here, I’ve actually not had a disappointing book yet this year).

6. Biggest Surprise

the late great me

The Late Great Me by Sandra Scoppettone. This was an oldie but goodie. I was very surprised by how much this story sucked me in although I have loved all of Sandra Scoppettone’s other books that I have read so I don’t know why this was such a shock to me.

It was probably because the subject-matter is a bit of a trigger for me. Having grown up with an alcoholic (my dad) I didn’t expect to relate to the main character quite as much as I did. It was definitely an eye-opener for me.

 7. Favourite New Author

red queen

I haven’t actually finished any new (to me) authors yet but I am in the middle of reading Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard which I am rather enjoying.

8. Newest Fictional Crush

crystal storm

This isn’t exactly new but I definitely am still loving Magnus from the Falling Kingdoms series. I do love a (semi) reformed bad guy. 😉 Magnus is on the cover for Crystal Storm and I couldn’t be happier about it. 😉

9. Newest Favourite Character

the late great me

Geri from The Late Great Me by Sandra Scoppettone. I just want to give her a hug and be her best friend. Seriously, this was such a great book. I cannot say enough good things about it.

10. Book That Made You Cry

the late great me

The Late Great Me by Sandra Scoppettone almost made me shed a few tears (what can I say, I’m so totally Chandler from Friends – dead inside). 😉

11. Book That Made You Happy

the raven king

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater. One word – Pynch. 😀 😀 Oh, and Bluesey – cannot forget about Bluesey. I just love all of these characters so much! Noah – I just want to give him a huge hug. Henry Cheng was another awesome addition. I also cannot forget the ladies at 300 Fox Way either.

You might be able to tell that I am a tad nonsensical when it comes to expressing my love for this series. 😉

12. Favourite Book to Film Adaptation

the 5th wave

The 5th Wave was an enjoyable film but I haven’t read the book as yet (I know, I know, I’m a bad reader). I actually really enjoyed this film and it has just made me more excited to read the books.

13. Favourite Post You Have Done This Year

the late great me

I’m pretty fond of my review for The Late Great Me. You can check it out here. I have gotten a bit lax when it comes to writing reviews lately (or reading at all for that matter) but this book was such a wonderful read I just had to write a review straight away basically outpouring all of my love for this gem of a book.

14. Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year

alice in wonderland

I’m totally in love with this edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll that has illustrations by Salvador Dali. It was re-released for the 150th Anniversary and it is gorgeous!

15. What Books Do You Need to Read by the End of the Year

the rose & the daggerthrone of glass

I totally need to finish The Rose & the Dagger by Renee Ahdieh and I also want to read the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. Actually, there are way too many books to list. 😛
