Favourite Monsters
This week I’ve decided to go all in and list the monsters that would scare the crap out of me if I were to come across them on a dark night (or in broad daylight even!) These creatures are so scary that I find it difficult to read about them, especially during the evening hours. This is coming from a complete horror aficionado too!
1. Wendigo
The Wendigo is a mythical man-eating monster or demonic spirit. They have the ability to possess humans and turn them into cannibals. They appear human-like but are very tall and thin; with sunken eyes and decaying skin. The earliest reference to this creature can be found in the legends of the Native Americans, most notably the Algonquian tribe. Although the legend of the Wendigo itself stems from folklore, Wendigo psychosis is a very real disorder where people develop an appetite for human flesh.
2. Skinwalker
The legend of the Skinwalkers originates from the Navajo, a southwestern Native American tribe. In Navajo culture, a Skinwalker is a type of harmful witch who has the ability to turn into, possess, or disguise themselves as an animal. Do yourself a favour – do not look this up when you are alone in the house! I think the idea of a Skinwalker terrifies me even more than a Wendigo. These monsters are beyond frightening. 😨
3. Kelpies
Whew, after talking of Skinwalkers and Wendigos the idea of a shapeshifter taking the form of a horse doesn’t seem so terrifying! Kelpies are a predominantly Scottish myth of a shape-shifting water spirit inhabiting the lochs of Scotland. Although usually depicted as a horse they are able to take human form. Kelpies would lure their victims onto their backs and lead them to their watery grave.
4. Black-Eyed Children
An urban legend of creatures that resemble children or young teens with pale skin and black eyes. They terrorize both residential neighbourhoods and lonely highways so don’t dare stop or open your door for them. Although tales of black-eyed children have existed since the 1950s, they definitely seem to be the folklore of the digital age with many a Creepypasta dedicated to them. 😨
5. Fleshgait
A Fleshgait seems to be something akin to a Skinwalker but it has developed its own internet-lore as a supernatural beast that stalks and lures people by attempting to mimic speech and vocal noises of humans (or sounds that animals make). They also steal people’s skins in order to look human. There appears to be some kind of differentiation in that Fleshgaits are not something human taking the form of an animal for evil ends, rather it is something trying to appear human that most definitely isn’t. Either way, frickin’ scary!! 😱
