New Feature: Brin’s Book Buzz: July

I have had some ideas for a new feature percolating around in my brain for some time. I really enjoy taking part in the weekly meme Waiting on Wednesday (hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine). There are so many great books coming out that I am eager to get my grubby little hands on. The problem is: there are way too many books out there to choose from and, as I am not swimming in cash these days, I have to be pretty careful about what I am going to buy.

That being said, there are some books coming out that I MUST BUY OR ELSE!! Seriously, it’s a need not a want (OK there is a little bit of want in there too, and a little less need if I am being totally honest). I will cry if I cannot buy my most anticipated books and we don’t want that – I might end up looking something like this:

dawson

I decided I needed to make a list of the books I am most excited for each month, in order to select the books I just cannot live without (I am prone to melodrama – can you tell? 😉 ). There are so many amazing releases, it can be really hard deciding on what is a priority need or not so I decided to go through the books that are out in July and determine which ones I am most excited for by rating them on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the ones I am most excited for, naturally).

Sometimes I get so caught up I am like a kid in a candy shop –  I get overwhelmed by the sheer selection on offer.

This began as an attempt to work out which books I was the most excited for – and then I thought it would be a good idea to share my opinions with you on my blog! These are just my thoughts on these upcoming July releases – not meant to be taken as gospel or anything. 😉

Here are the books coming out in July that I have been lusting after:

Silver Shadows by Richelle Mead

silver shadows

Expected release date July 29 2014

One of my most anticipated releases. I am a huge fan of the Vampire Academy series and although Bloodlines is very different (slower paced and definitely not as action-packed) it is still a worthwhile read. I much prefer Sydney as a main protagonist to Rose (I loved Rose at the start of the series but felt her character became a lot more self-involved as the series progressed) and Bloodlines has Adrian Ivashkov – my number 1 book boyfriend (well, tied for first with Tod from the Soul Screamers series – I can never make myself pick a favourite between the two).

Dream Boy by Madelyn Rosenberg and Mary Crockett

dream boy

Expected release date: July 1 2014

I recently came across this title and it looks really intriguing. It’s a debut which is great because I love trying new authors and it is a paranormal which also really interested me since I haven’t been reading many this year and I would like to do something about that. The synopsis sounds really intriguing – it definitely grabbed my attention (plus how gorgeous is that cover?) I will definitely be seeking this one out.

Wild by Alex Mallory

Expected release date: July 8 2014

A Young Adult modern-day Tarzan retelling? Sign me up! This looks like a really fascinating read and judging by some of the initial reviews I have seen, it seems like the kind of book I would really enjoy. I loved Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, the 1984 film starring Christopher Lambert when I was a kid, so I have a soft-spot for any Tarzan stories (though I must confess I have never read the original book Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs). This looks like a really intriguing read.

Extraction by Stephanie Diaz

extraction

Expected release date: July 22 2014

I love science fiction and love dystopian settings so this book caught my eye right away. Another debut, it has been likened to The Hunger Games and Ender’s Game so I am definitely intrigued. The premise looks interesting: a young girl called Clementine is ‘extracted’ from her toxic planet to the utopian sounding ‘Core’ but things are not what they seem and there are dangers Clementine could not have foreseen. This is the first book in what could be an incredibly thrilling and intense series (if done correctly) so I am looking forward to reading this.

The Half Life of Molly Pierce by Katrina Leno

half life of molly pierce

Expected release date: July 8 2014

I have been looking forward to this book for ages – it is one of the most anticipated debut novels that is coming out this year for me by far. The premise really speaks to me and I love a good thriller – this book looks like it can really deliver an intense, nail-biting experience. Initial reviews are favourable so I am keep my fingers crossed for this one!

Illusive by Emily Lloyd-Jones

illusive

Expected release date: July 15 2014

I seriously love the cover for this plus where can you go wrong with a book that is described as a cross between X-Men and Ocean’s Eleven?  Colour me excited for this one! Criminals plus people with superpowers – I am officially excited. This really does look amazing – I just hope it lives up to the hype!

On The Fence by Kasie West

on the fence

Expected release date: July 1 2014

I have yet to read any Kasie West books, despite owning both The Distance Between Us and Pivot Point, but I cannot help but be excited for this one. It looks like a really fun contemporary novel – perfect summer reading. I also really love the cover (so shallow but I cannot help but be drawn in by a pretty cover and this one really is gorgeous). This book has been on my radar for some time and I am eagerly anticipating its release.

Welcome to the Dark House by Laurie Faria Stolarz

welcome to the dark house

Expected release date: July 22 2014

I don’t know quite what it is about this book that makes it so intriguing to me but something about it draws me in. I love a bit of horror now and again and this books looks like it will serve up and good mix of creepiness and thrills. The premise is interesting if a little confusing (the many characters could be hard to keep up with) but I really think this could be a hit for me.

Sinner by Maggie Stiefvater

sinner

Expected release date: July 1 2014

OK so this one is a bit of a cheat! I have become an unapologetic Maggie Stiefvater fangirl. I loved The Scorpio Races and The Raven Cycle series so much. On the other hand, I had a hard time with Shiver the first time I read it years ago (when it first came out) and I haven’t even read Linger or Forever yet. So why am I excited for Sinner (which is a follow-up to The wolves of Mercy Falls series)? The simple answer is: I don’t know – but I really want to get my hands on this book! Realistically though, it is not as much of a priority since I still want to read Linger and Forever first. 😉

Conversion by Katherine Howe

conversion

Expected release date: July 1 2014

This looks amazing! The story is based around a school called St. Joan’s Academy in Danvers, Massachusetts. Strange and unusual occurrences start happening. One of the students Colleen realizes that Danvers was once Salem Village. The events are remarkably similar to what happened there in the past and things are spiralling out of control. Can Colleen stop what is happening before it is too late? This book looks like it could be a chilling modern-day retelling of the tragic events that occurred in Salem in the 17th Century, I love the idea of this book and I really hope it is as good as it sounds.

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson

kiss of deception

Expected release date: July 15 2014

Fantasy is my go-to genre and this apeears like it could be the start of a really fantastic series. It looks like it has an unusual mix of fantasy with a dystopian setting (which is a setting usually reserved for science fiction novels) so I am definitely excited for this book. The reviews are pretty decent across the board so far – I have seen a lot of reviews where people were pretty surprised by how much they enjoyed this book when they weren’t expecting to, so that bodes well for The Kiss of Deception. Plus, the cover is really pretty!

Through to You by Lauren Barnholdt

through to you

Expected release date: July 8 2014

Through to You seems like a nice, easy contemporary read. Sometimes I like a lighter, fluffier subject matter and this book does look like it could be fairly diverting. It would be a break from all the angst and drama anyway! I am not super-excited for this but it is probably a book I would pick up for a bit of a change of pace. The cover is pretty cute too!

Divider

Well, that is my list of most highly anticipated books that are being released in July. There are probably many (many) others that have temporarily slipped my mind but the above are the ones that have caught my eye. Going by my Buzzworthy scale, I would say that the most likely purchases are (in order of excitement):

silver shadows  on the fence  conversion

wild  half life of molly pierce  illusive  welcome to the dark house

dream boy  extraction  kiss of deception

sinner

through to you

So there you have it – looks like I have a reading/buying priority list! I better start saving my pennies – I think July is going to be a poor month but I cannot wait to get my hands on some of these beauties!

I am very curious to see what books my fellow bloggers are excited for and would love everyone to add in the comments below what books you foresee yourself making a priority in July. Happy reading!!

**Note to self** for the next Book Buzz post please try and come up with a different expression than ‘intrigued’ – I never realised before that I used this word quite so much!!

  1. I’ve made a physical list of all the books I’m looking forward to for the rest of the year, but my only July release is Silver Shadows. I love Bloodlines, and I really need to continue on with the VA series. It’s just so distracting, seeing all the other unread books on my shelf… and the library provides a big distraction, too, haha!

    • I really had to make a list – I end up buying way too many books otherwise! I cannot wait for Silver Shadows (particularly after the cliffhanger we were left with at the end of the last book).

I know what you mean – it is so distracting seeing all the other books out there – you just want them all! Lol 😉

    • Adrian = <3 !!

I forgot about Landline – I really love Rainbow Rowell so will definitely be picking that one up! I hadn't heard of The Dead Will Tell – I will look out for it. 😉
