Things That Will Make Me Instantly NOT Want To Read A Book
I have been woefully neglecting my blog as of late (been playing A LOT of Mass Effect Andromeda) so I though it was time to get my arse in gear and actually put out some new content (and not before time). This topic looked way too juicy to pass up!
1. Love triangles
C’mon, this one is bound to be on the vast majority of bloggers lists! I hate nothing more than a main character who waffles between multiple love interests (yep, sometimes there is even more than just three people in the triangle – making it a love square or other shapey thing). Twilight gets a lot of flack for this but there are even worse examples out there… okay, maybe not but you get my drift. 😀
2. Tortured/angsty love interests
This one’s a bit of a double-edged sword because when it is done right it can be one of my favourite tropes. I love me some angst and tragedy but sometimes a little goes a long, long way. I feel that it is becoming a lazy tool to hook in readers but often does not deliver in a satisfying way. Just IMHO, obviously.
3. Special snowflakes
Everyone has met at least one of these. The characters that are just so special that they are the only ones who can save the day (insert plot point of choice here). Bleurgh.
4. “She released the breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding”
You could make a drinking game out of this so I suppose it could have some entertainment merit. I have never in my life held my breath without realizing it. Does anybody actually do this? How is it we all do not expire from oxygen deprivation? Especially when the object of our desire is nearby. o.O
5. Instalove
Instalust is acceptable (hey, it happens!) but instalove is definitely one of the most annoying, rage-inducing tropes that permeates the young adult genre. Just… no.
6. Couples who have overly cutesy nicknames for each other
Yes, me and my SO have nicknames for each other but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t an irritation when I see it happen in books (once or twice is fine but excessive use of this drives me barmy).
7. Certain words
I know this is a bit of a vague one, but I absolutely hate the word ‘moist’ – if I encounter it in a book, even if it is one I am otherwise enjoying, I have to take myself away from it for a while to recover (funny fact: I also hate the word ‘armpit’ but luckily that is not one which is used often in the books I read lol). 😀
8. Detailed/descriptive sex scenes
By this I mean “he inserted part here into hole here” type descriptions. I am not a prude (okay, maybe a little bit) but sex scenes get me squirming in a very different kind of way. I’m just not that into smut although, if it is well-written and more about the emotions of the characters I can get behind it – wait, that came out waaaaaay ruder than intended!
9. Slut-shaming
I guess everyone has been guilty of this (hangs head in shame at younger self) but I really do not like this in books UNLESS it is a major plot point of the book itself (and, ya know, portrays this as a bad, bad thing).
10. Bad boy changes due to the love of a good woman
Nope, nope, nope. I don’t objectively hate all bad boys (actually rather partial to the bad ones) but for pity’s sake let them stay bad! I hate the stories where the protagonist’s love is the one thing that can tame a bad boy. It just doesn’t happen in real life (at least, not in my experience).

I agree with almost everything on your list, wow 🙂
I sometimes start to hate certain words when they get used too often in a book. And when it gets to that point, I always wonder whether the editor noticed^^
Great list, I agree with pretty much all of these! I totally forgot #4 for my list, but it really is one of the most annoying sentences ever!
