Top Ten Tuesday is an awesome meme previously hosted by the lovely folks @ The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s theme is top ten:
Disney Villains
This week’s topic is Villains and was left pretty open (favourite, best, worst, lovable, creepiest, most evil, etc.) so I’ve decided to go with my favourite Disney villains! I’ve already listed my favourite villains from books in various posts so I thought it would be fun to go with my other favourite thing aside from books – all things Disney! Let’s face it, most Disney villains are cool-as so it was a no-brainer really!
I am a day late but I didn’t want to miss out on this topic, especially when I got the idea in my head to list my favourite Disney villains!
1. Shan Yu – Mulan
Shan Yu is the main villain of Disney’s Mulan. He is the evil leader of the Hun Army. Shan Yu is one of the creepiest Disney villains (visually and otherwise).
2. The Evil Queen – Snow White
I don’t know about you, but the transformation sequence where the Evil Queen turned into the old hag used to scare the living daylights out of me when I was a kid. Still scary now, come to think of it… 😉
3. Gaston – Beauty and the Beast
Urgh, Gaston. I feel pretty much the same way that Belle does about Gaston but there is no denying he makes for a great villain. His narcissism is scarier than any supernatural powers.
4. Mother Gothel – Tangled
One of the most particularly insidious Disney Villains, Mother Gothel is scary because of how realistic she is. She completely gaslights Rapunzel to keep her under lock and key. This type of abuse is rarely seen in films let alone animations which makes it all the scarier.
5. Scar – The Lion King
Scar is such an evil bastard but you can totally see how he got that way (without excusing any of his actions, of course). Definitely a worthy villain.
6. Ursula – The Little Mermaid
I love to hate Ursula. She’s so entertaining it’s hard not to enjoy her even when she is being particularly evil! I have always loved The Little Mermaid and Ursula is a huge part of the reason why.
7. Shere Khan – The Jungle Book
That presence. That voice. There can be no doubt that Shere Khan is charismatic and more of a gentlemanly bad guy – who would be more than happy to rip your throat out… 😉
8. The Wicked Stepmother – Cinderella
Lady Tremaine, or Cinderella’s Wicked Stepmother is the epitome of an evil old bag. She is particularly awful and there is no excusing her abuse of Cinderella. She is the perfect villainess.
9. Captain Hook – Peter Pan
Now, Captain Hook is the type of villain I actually feel sorry for. Not that I am condoning his obsession with bringing down Peter Pan but I can see where he is coming from. Peter Pan is not exactly a heroic character however the narrative attempts to frame him as such. I guess I have a soft spot for pirates…
10. Maleficent – Sleeping Beauty
As far I as I am concerned, Maleficent is the head bitch in charge of all the other Disney villains. She is awesome. Evil certainly, but completely awesome. I just adore her. Plus, she can turn into a dragon people! That is badass!! 😍

That scene with Lady Tremaine is sooo creepy. I hated how her eyes glowed!
Great list, I think Judge Frollo and Dr Facilier make my top 5.
Great list – I think part of the reason why Shan Yu makes for such a creepy villain is that, unlike a lot of the other villains, we get almost none of his perspective — he doesn’t sing any of his songs, doesn’t give us his backstory, or his motivations. It’s amazing.
I love your answers. Shan Yu is my top villain and I thought he’s intimidating and scary. Aside from Shan Yu, Zira (Lion King II: Simba’s Pride) and Hades (Hercules) are my favorites. 🙂
Ursula gave me nightmares as a kid. Those tentacles are creepy. I always liked Scar, though. He’s unapologetically evil.
This list makes me want to go on a Disney watching spree! Gaston and Scar and Ursula and Shan Yu! Great choices <3
