Love Interests I Would Have Broken Up With
Oh, I like this topic very much! I am often shaking my head over certain love interests in popular book series so to get the chance to throw shade at some of them – yes please!
1. Rhysand – A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas
Look, Tamlin is a tool, no doubt about that. But I don’t think Rhysand is much of a step up, to be honest. Yes, he got Feyre out of a horrible situation, but I found him just as jealous and possessive in different ways. I know this is an extremely unpopular opinion, and Rhys is beloved by most of the ACOTAR fandom, but I could never particularly warm to the guy (and A Court of frost and Starlight just made that worse). My crack pairing is probably Feyre/Lucien anyways!
2. Molly – Realm of the Elderlings series by Robin Hobb
Words cannot describe how much Molly bugged me (and not just because I always held out a little for a Fitz/Fool pairing). To say that Molly and Fitz were ill-suited is putting it mildly. Fitz could never truly be himself with her – he was always hiding or holding back certain parts of himself. I just really didn’t think it was a pairing of equals at all.
3. Mal – Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo
Oh Mal, let me count the ways I loathe thee… Seriously, I’ve actually only read the first book but I hated Mal with every fibre of my being. He is awful. Don;t get me wrong, the Darkling probably wasn’t the healthiest choice either (as fascinating as I find him) but I really wanted to give Alina a slap for being so enamoured with such a bore.
4. Evanjalin – Lumatere Chronicles by Melina Marchetta
I really cannot bear Evanjalin – like it’s a visceral kind of hatred. I should like her (after all, she is a strong female character with agency) but I just don’t. She withholds vital information, is manipulative and generally is just someone I cannot get behind. I honestly don’t know why Finnikin had any time for her after some of the crap that she pulled.
5. Deacon – Promises Series by Amy Lane
This spot was nearly taken by Cal from the Red Queen series but I then remembered Deacon from Amy Lane’s Promises series. I didn’t start out disliking Deacon but the absolute worship of him from all the other characters just got to be a bit much. He is held up as the perfect person and he really… isn’t? Yet no one else seems to see this. Nope, not a fan – I will not drink the Kool-Aid. 😉
