My Favourite Long Series

There haven’t been any prompts for the month of October (as yet) so I decided to go back to an old topic from June that I started and then abandoned (because I was feeling burned out). I read a lot of long series so for this post I’m going to set a restriction of a series with more than 5 books.

I’m also only listing series where I have read all of the books so this will only be completed series (had to narrow it down somehow!!) or at least currently completed series (you never know if an author will continue to write further books down the road…) Some of these authors may have subsequent series (some being continuations) which may not be finished but the ones listed are. 😉

1. Realm of the Elderlings series by Robin Hobb

long series

There are a whopping sixteen books in this series (as it stands anyway) and they are pretty much my favourite series of books ever (no joke – my absolute numero uno). Robin Hobb has a way of making her characters flawed but so very beloved (heh) and her world-building and attention to is amazing (seriously, things mentioned passingly in the first book can later become a major story point – the threads all tie together in a very satisfying way).

2. Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier

long series

Boasting six books in total, this is one of my all-time favourite fantasy series. Anything by Juliet Marillier is worth checking out but these books are special to me. The original trilogy came into my life at a time when I really needed them and for that they will always remain dear to my heart (and the fact that they are amazing, obviously!)

3. Hazard and Somerset series by Gregory Ashe

long series

This series man, it’s just so incredibly engrossing. I first read these books a couple of years ago (and actually re-read them again recently) and they became a firm favourite. The first series following detectives Hazard and Somerset has six books in total and the follow-up series has five with a new series currently on book one (of how many I don’t know yet). I’m always happy for more time with these characters!

4. Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent

long series

I am a huge fan of the seven book strong series! I first began reading this series when the first book was released in 2009 but struggled to get into it and put it aside. I tried again in 2013 when the last book was just about to be released and this time I was hooked. This is such a great series – it’s a shame it isn’t more well-known.

5. Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead

long series

I credit the Vampire Academy series as being my gateway back into YA novels. This six book series (and spin-off series Bloodlines) is fangtastic (see what I did there?) Seriously though, this entire series is amazing and I return to it often when I need some comfort. The characters are dynamic and the setting is amazing. A vampire series done right, IMHO.
