Books I Dropped Only to Come Back and Love It The Second Time

I am such mood reader so I relate hard to this week’s T5W prompt!! There have been many books that have failed to capture my attention the first time I’ve tried to read them (sometimes the second and third time too!) There are a few that I know it’s because it just isn’t a ‘me’ book but sometimes everything should be clicking for me but it doesn’t. I’m not afraid to put a book down and try again some other day which has worked out pretty well for me for the most part. Here are some books that initially I didn’t jibe with but later became firm favourites!

second chance books

1. Magician by Raymond E. Feist

This was the first book that sprung to mind when I sat down to comprise this list! I actually dropped this book several times before it finally caught me in the right frame of mind. I ended up devouring it and went on to read the rest of the series (at least, to the point that it was up to). I’ve kinda lost my way a bit with the last couple of books (I own them but haven’t read them yet) but I think a re-read of the preceding books will be necessary as it’s been a few years.

2. My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent

I bought the first book in the Soul Screamers series when it was first published but couldn’t get into it at all the couple of times I tried to pick it up. It wasn’t until the fifth book was released that I tried to give it another go and I’m so glad that I did as this series is now one of my all-time favourites!

3. Graceling by Kristin Cashore

This is a funny one because I actually read the second book Fire first accidently thinking it was the initial book (it’s set prior to Graceling but is book two in the series). I adored Fire so much that it was difficult to switch to Graceling and I ended up putting it down for a while and came back to it when Fire wasn’t so fresh in my mind and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have since re-read the series in the order it was meant to be read and love the first book (although I love the romances more in the last couple that were more recently released).

4. Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewelling

I read the Tamir trilogy first from the author (which is set in an earlier time period as the Nightrunner series but was released after the original Nightrunner trilogy) and adored them. This, however, made it really hard to get into Luck in the Shadows and I struggled through about a third of the book before giving up. I returned to it about a year later and this go-around I just felt that click and it has since become one of my favourite fantasy series.

5. Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

I love Sarah Rees Brannan as an author – her quirky, funny writing just speaks to me. So you might be surprised that I struggled to get into Unspoken – the first book in the The Lynburn Legacy. I’m not even sure why because it has all her usual trademark wit but I ended up putting it to the side after a couple of chapters. I did pick it back up a year or so later and absolutely loved it so there’s that… heh. 😉
