20 questions

It’s been a really long time since I completed a book tag on this blog and I really liked the questions in this one. I haven’t actually been tagged by anyone but I came across this tag on Kelly’s blog Just Another Book in the Wall (cool name and fun factoid – my other half is currently listening to Pink Floyd in another room and it made me chuckle!)

The 20 Questions Book Tag

1. How many books is too many books in a series?

I think six books is probably the maximum I am comfortable with. Some series just drag on endlessly – as an illustration, I came across the Wars of Light and Shadow series by Janny Wurts when I was going through my books the other day. This series is a prime example of one that has gone long past it’s sell by date! To clarify I lost interest somewhere around book eight. The forthcoming Song of the Mysteries will be the last book – which means it will top it out at 11 books. Yikes…

2. How do you feel about cliffhangers?

Eh, I have mixed feelings. On one hand, it makes me very excited for the next book but on the other I really hate having to wait any length of time for the next one especially if it will take years to come out. George R.R. Martin, I’m looking at you…

3. Hardback or paperback?

I love the aesthetics of a nice hardback and find them much more pleasing to look at on my shelves but you cannot beat a paperback for comfort and ease whilst actually reading.

4. Favourite book?

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien will forever and always be my favourite book thus I can credit it for my great love of fantasy which has stayed with me long into adulthood.

5. Least favourite book?

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick. I hated this book. Hated. By far and away this was the easiest of these questions to answer! 😀 I’m just not a fan of angels in books. I almost don’t like answering questions like these because I know everyone has different tastes nonetheless this book annoys the crap out of me!

6. Love triangles, yes or no?

I despise love triangles in every form of media known to man! Conversely, there have maybe been one or two that have been done well but they are in the minority.

7. The most recent book you just couldn’t finish?

I have really struggled to get into Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. Oh the other hand, I have heard a lot of good things about the series and it is normally something I would enjoy, with this in mind, I will definitely give Red Queen another go at some point because it can be sometimes I’m just not in the mood for something.

8. A book you’re currently reading?

I will definitely finish this because the subject is fascinating but I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara is one disturbing read (and that’s coming from someone who has more than passing familiarity with the case). It will probably take me awhile because I will have to read it in bite-sized chunks.

9. Last book you recommended to someone?

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. I’m definitely pushing this onto to everyone! Seriously, read this book – it is amazeballs!! Prince Cardan and Jude are just… *happy sigh*

10. Oldest book you’ve read? (Publication date)

Hmm, according to Goodreads that would be The Merchant of Venice by one William Shakespeare which was originally published in 1596. I’m not in the habit of reading Shakespeare – this book/play was one I read for school!

11. Newest book you’ve read? (Publication date)

The most recently published book I have read this year is Point of Contact by Melanie Hansen (definitely worth reading but the angst was high with this one!)

12. Favourite author?

This is an easy one – definitely Robin Hobb! Her Realm of the Elderlings series is my favourite series ever and I will never not enjoy her writing. Fitz and the Fool are my OTP that will never be… 🙁

13. Buying books or borrowing books?

I love to own books so definitely buying for me. On the other hand, I used to be a huge supporter of borrowing books from libraries and I would still really encourage it (especially for kids) but I love to own my favourite books and know that I can return to them again and again.

14. A book you dislike that everyone else seem to love?

I definitely seem to be the lone wolf about Falling for the Ghost of You by Nicole Christie. I was eager to read this after so many glowing reviews yet I truly struggled with this book henceforth I will be a bit more careful in future with recommendations!

15. Bookmarks or dog-ears?

Goodness, bookmarks for sure – who dog-ears books?! Seriously, are we cavemen?? I hate seeing books damaged that way and I am very particular about taking care of my books. Yet I love to buy second-hand vintage books? Ah well, we are allowed contradictions! These questions are fun!

16. A book you can always reread?

I tend to re-read most of my favourites but probably the one I have re-read the most is Watership Down by Richard Adams as by and large it is like my comfort blanket, ultimately I will return to it again and again.

17. Can you read while hearing music?

I tend to tune anything out when I am reading (unless it’s really loud) so the answer is technically yes but I don’t think there is much actual active listening going on. 😀

18. One POV or multiple POV’s?

I guess this depends on the book but for the most part I prefer single POV books (I am a lover of first person as well). There are some books that do the whole multiple POV thing very well though.

19. Do you read a book in one sitting or over multiple days?

Ideally, I would prefer to read a book in one sitting but it depends on how much time I have scheduled in for reading. With this in mind, due to the fact that I tend to read in bed I usually only have a couple of hours at most however, at the same time I’m a speed-reader so that’s sometimes all I need!

20. A book you’ve read because of the cover?

I am a sucker for a pretty cover and sometimes it works in my favour and other times it doesn’t, for example I read Uprooted by Naomi Novik based on cover-love alone and it was the best decision I ever made on the other hand the less said about Hush, Hush the better!

This tag was so much fun! If you haven’t already done this one, I tag you! Try it – the questions are really fun! Thanks for reading! ❤
