stacking the shelves bookish haul

Stacking the Shelves – a weekly meme hosted by Tynga’s ReviewsReading Reality

what’s the buzz: weekly round-up

Aside from spending outside my means (except for my haul of vintage paperbacks – I got those for a song!) I haven’t actually been up to much at all this week. As a result, there is not much to report. I didn’t even get round to posting my usual weekly posts either. This was total laziness on my part, if I’m being honest.

book haul (mainly vintage paperbacks)

Most of my purchases this week were vintage paperbacks. I bought a lot of 97 vintage books on eBay this week. It was a bit of a gamble though. From the photos it was hard to see what books were in this lot. But I have come across a few beauties and I’m well-chuffed with what I received! Barely any duplicates of books I already own as well which is always a bonus! I also got a couple of new books too. 😉

vintage paperbacks (and a couple new books too!)

Mirage by Somaiya Daud | Vengeful by V.E. Schwab | Dare by Natalia Jaster | Trick by Natalia Jaster | Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Yes, there two copies of ‘Vengeful’ – one is a special edition (via the Illumicrate ‘Magic & Mayhem box) but I also loved the regular edition so now I have both! I also got ‘Mirage’ in another book box (not saying which one cause spoilers!)  Lastly, I also purchased the new editions of Trick and Dare by Natalia Jaster. They are so beautiful I could cry! 😉

vintage paperbacks (and a couple new books too!)

1st row:

Five Have a Mystery to Solve by Enid Blyton | Five Go Down to the Sea by Enid Blyton | Gone Away by Ruth Tomalin | The Mystery of the Melted Coins by Franklin W. Dixon | Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren | The Merry-Go-Round by James Reeves | Good Old Secret Seven by Enid Blyton | The Victors by John Harris | The Adventures of John and Tigger by Delia Huddy

A couple of television series tie-in Famous Five editions. I remember watching the series when I was young (on reruns – I wasn’t around in the 1970s!) Some really amazing vintage paperbacks!

2nd row:

Mr Pink-Whistle’s Party by Enid Blyton | Shadows on the Sand by Joe Dever and Gary Chalk | Cassidy in Danger by Diana Pullein-Thompson | Cannibal Adventure by William Price | Moonfleet by J. Meade Falkner | Then Again, Maybe I Won’t by Judy Blume | James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl | Grimm’s Fairy Tales by Amabel Williams-Ellis | A Bad Scare for the Worst Witch by Jill Murphy | The Last Polar Bears by Harry Horse | I Saw Three Ships by Elizabeth Goudge | Lions at Lunchtime by Mary Pope Osborne | Treehorn’s Treasure by Florence Parry Heide | Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great by Judy Blume

A couple of US Dell editions of Judy Blume titles – super-excited about these! Definitely a few treasures in here: ‘Moonfleet’, ‘I Saw Three ships’… to name just a few! Indeed, there are a fair number of titles I’m really happy to finally add to my collection.

vintage paperbacks (and a couple new books too!)

Five Run Away Together by Enid Blyton | Pippi Goes Abroad by Astrid Lindgren | Hunting for Hidden Gold by Franklin W. Dixon | The Flickering Torch Mystery by Franklin W. Dixon | First Term at Malory Tower by Enid Blyton | By the Shores of Silver Lake by Laura Ingalls Wilder | Well Done Secret Seven by Enid Blyton | Fun for the Secret Seven by Enid Blyton | The Farthest Shore by Ursula Le Guin | The Sword of the Spirits by John Christopher | Ginger Over the Wall by Prudence Andrew | The Queen’s Brooch by Henrey Treece

Another couple of Enid Blyton titles plus some Hardy Boys novels. Some great vintage paperbacks to be found in this lot. I’m glad I took a chance on this.

vintage paperbacks (and a couple new books too!)

Catch Me a Colobus by Gerald Durrell | Emmerdale Farm: The Legacy by Lee Mackenzie | Secret Seven Mystery by Enid Blyton | Safari Adventure by William Price | The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain | African Adventure by William Price | Last Term at Malory Towers by Enid Blyton | The Secret Seven by Enid Blyton | The Prince in Waiting by John Christopher | The Perilous Descent by Bruce CarterThe Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm by Norman HunterProfessor Branestawm’s Great Revolution by Norman Hunter

I spot an Emmerdale Farm novel in the midst of these books! That is just so quintessentially British I can’t even… Aside from the laugh I got at noticing an Emmerdale book within this lot some pretty great books here.

vintage paperbacks (and a couple new books too!)

The Story of the Treasure Seekers by E. Nesbit | Stig of the Dump by Clive King | Tarka the Otter by Henry Williamson | Professor Branestawm’s Treasure Hunt by Norman Hunter | Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett | The Colour of Magic by Terry Pratchett | Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett | The Last Continent by Terry Pratchett | The Mill House Cat by Marjorie-Ann Watts

Lots of Terry Pratchett books in this bundle – think the universe is giving me a sign?? Also got another couple of classics such as ‘The Story of the Treasure Hunters’ and ‘Tarka the Otter’.

vintage paperbacks (and a couple new books too!)

Marry Me by John Updike | African Adventure by William Price | Come Back, Lucy by Pamela Sykes | Mistress Masham’s Repose by T.H. White | Susan, Bill and the Wolf Dog by Malcolm Saville | Apple Bough by Noel Streatfeild | Gorilla Adventure by William Price | Cannibal Adventure by William Price | The Cave by Richard Church | The Circus is Coming by Noel Streatfeild | A Day to go Hunting by Christine Pullein-Thompson

Well, I was doing good at not having any duplicates in this lot. It seems to have two copies of ‘African Adventure’ and ‘Cannibal Adventure’ – but out of 97 books that isn’t bad. 😉

vintage paperbacks (and a couple new books too!)

Book of Milliganimals by Spike Milligan | The Last Cowboys by Harry Horse | The Story of the Treasure Seekers by E. Nesbit | Look Out Secret Seven by Enid Blyton | The Good Master by Kate Seredy | The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula Le Guin | House-at-the-Corner by Enid Blyton | Six Cousins Again by Enid Blyton | The Children at Green Meadows by Enid Blyton

And…another duplicate. Ahh well, such is life! I’m pretty happy with the Enid Blyton books in this lot. There are also a couple of books I haven’t even heard of which is a rare thing.

vintage paperbacks (and a couple new books too!)

Lion Adventure by William Price | A Stitch in Time by Penelope Lively | Ramona the Pest by Beverly Cleary | Ramona the Brave by Beverly Cleary | Abandoned! by G.D. Griffiths | The Tale of Troy by Roger Lancelyn Green | New Treasure Seekers by E. Nesbit | The Driftway by Penelope Lively | Mister God This is Anna by Fynn | Five Go to Smuggler’s Top by Enid Blyton | The Twelve and the Genii by Pauline Clarke | The Runaway Summer by Nina Bawden | Amazon Adventure by William Price | Jumbo Spencer by Helen Cresswell

A couple of Beverly Cleary books (been meaning to buy her books for a while). Also Penelope Lively which is pretty rad. I’m really happy with most of the vintage paperbacks here.

vintage paperbacks (and a couple new books too!)

The Bears on Hemlock Mountain by Alice Dalgliesh | Kept in the Dark by Nina Bawden | The Quicksilver Horse by Anne Digby | You’re A Winner, Charlie Brown by Charles M. Schulz | Professor Branestawm’s Dictionary by Norman Hunter | Warrior Scarlet by Rosemary Sutcliff | Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang by Mordecai Richler | Boy: Tales of Childhood by Roald Dahl

Whew, finally I reach the end! This took absolutely ages. I could say I won’t buy so many books again but that would probably be a lie! So, instead I’m going to say I will try to keep the book-buying to a minimum for a bit. I just can never resist vintage paperbacks. 😀
